Education Updates @ 5/12 BOE Meeting
Monday's BOE meeting will start with the conferral of tenure to 26 outstanding Scarsdale Educators. During the business meeting that follows, Dr. Edgar McIntosh will present updates in response to faculty and community feedback regarding our elementary math curriculum. After that, Mr. Ken Bonamo will share updates on the work of the SHS Assessment Committee related to rolling gradebook and online gradebook for the 25-26 school year. The meeting will also include an update on the work of the Capital Projects Steering Committee. Please tune in!
NY Assembly Summer Reading Challenge
Assemblywoman Amy Paulin wants our young readers to know about the Assembly Summer Reading Challenge. This annual initiative, created by the New York State Assembly, encourages students to keep their reading skills sharp over the summer. Students who read for at least 15 minutes a day for 40 days during the summer will be recognized with an official certificate from Assemblywoman Paulin celebrating their achievement.
State Budget & Device Ban Update
On Thursday night, the NYS Legislature passed the 2025-26 state budget. Fortunately, Scarsdale's school aid figures came in as expected at a level consistent with what is included in the Board's adopted budget. Also adopted Thursday evening were several non-spending items, including the anticipated bell-to-bell device ban for schools. This bill adds a new section to the Education Law, effective with the 2025-26 school year, requiring Boards of Education to adopt a policy, "prohibiting the use of internet-enabled devices by students during the school day anywhere on school grounds." The Board of Education has been working on a policy in anticipation of this new law, and will continue discussing the policy at the Monday, May 13, business meeting.
