Dear Heathcote Family,
This year, we begin our Book of the Month program with the multi-award winning picture book, One, by Kathryn Otoshi. It is a very simple, yet profound, book. The story is about bullying, empathy, counting, acceptance and the power of one person to begin a change. It is the story of the importance of standing up for ourselves and the idea that there is strength in numbers.
Blue is a quiet color who sometimes feels badly about himself. He wishes he could be sunnier, like Yellow, and brighter, like Green. Red is a hothead who likes to pick on Blue and also makes him feel badly. Although the other colors are empathetic, they are afraid to speak up to Red and defend Blue. With no one stopping him Red’s power grows and everyone is afraid of him. Suddenly, One appears. One fearlessly stands up to Red. Upon seeing this, the rest of the colors stand up to be "counted". It is One who shows all of the colors how to stand up, stand together, and count. Even Blue stands up tall to Red. In the end, Red is not ostracized but instead embraced and told that he too, can count. The colors learn about accepting and celebrating each other's differences.
Everyone counts! What a wonderful message to share with our students and staff. We all count, each and every one of us here at Heathcote.
Warmest regards,
Maria R. Stile
