Mystery Reader 2016-2017
October
In October we kick started our mystery reader program. We welcomed Megan Rosen. She read us a book called
Fright Club by Ethan Long. Students made magnetic Halloween decorations and completed a Halloween word search. A good time was had by all.
Our second October mystery reader was Elizabeth Macisco. She read us a story called
Stella Remembers from
Roots and Rainbows, Thoughtful Awareness with Children by Merrilee Narensky. She taught students some breathing techniques to help calm our minds and bodies. Students also made colorful calming jars. We're trying to be more mindful of our health.
November
In November, we welcomed Lauren Grossberg as our mystery reader. She read us a book called
Derek Jeter Presents, Night At The Stadium by Phil Bildner and illustrated by Tom Booth. Ask your child what this book was about. Students made books about what they are thankful for.
Our next mystery reader was Anita Singhal. She read us a book called
Thank You Sarah, The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson. Mrs. Singhal led a discussion with students about having courage. Students drew a photo of something they needed the courage to overcome. Then photos were framed.
December
In December, we welcomed Mrs. Jodi Keller. She read us a book called
Rocket Writes A Story by Tad Hills. Students made snowmen for the art activity.
Our next mystery reader was Lori Harrison. She read us a story called The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Students created a picture on blank puzzle pieces. Student then traded puzzles to put it back together.
January
Our first mystery reader was Shirley Kong. She read us a book called
It's Time To Sleep You Crazy Sheep by Alison Ritchie. Students participated in a discussion about the importance of sleep. Students made sheep just like the ones in the story.
Our next mystery reader was Angela Liu. She read us a book called
Otis and the Puppy by Loren Long. As a project, students made book marks.
February
Our first mystery reader this month was Leah Dembitzer. She read us some poetry by Langston Hughes. We talked about how the poems made us feel and the pictures we formed in our heads as the words were read aloud. The next book she read us was The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by Pat Zietlow Miller. Students had various coloring activities and word searches to complete as an activity.
Our next mystery reader was Mr. Ostfeld. He read us a book called
If I Built A House by Chris Van Dusen. He talked to us about his job as an architect. As an activity, he taught us how to draw houses just by drawing a simple square.
March
Our mystery reader this month was Bonnie Greenwald. She read us a book called Pearla and Her Unpredictable Perfect Day by Rachel Lieberman and Chatur The Laundry Man by Subhash Kommuru. Ask your child about the lessons learned in each book. As an activity, the students made slime. It was a fun time!
Our next mystery reader was Tanya Dutta. She read us a book called
What Do You Do With An IDEA? by Kobi Yamada. Students received journals to write their own ideas. Students had a great time decorating their journals. A good time was had by all.
April
We started the month with a visit from Mrs. Ramika Arora read us a book called
Walter's Magic Wand by Eric Houghton. As an activity, students made their own magic wands. Ask your child about the book.
Our next visitor was Mr. Michael Josephs. He read us his favorite book called
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. As an activity students made their own giving trees. Students discussed what they would give of themselves on post it notes.
Our last mystery reader was Mrs. Jill Schulmann. She read us a book called
A Bill's Journey Into Law by Suzanne Slade. We watched a Schoolhouse Rock video of a bill becoming a law. Then we wrote down ideas for laws we would like to have like the no homework law, or the no school on Fridays law, and the free ice cream on your birthday law. Students were also given a word search.

We kicked off the month with Dara Feuerstein. She read us two books. One book was called
Danny Dog, A Rescue Dog Finds His Forever Home by Sid Shapira. The other book was called
Before You Were Mine by Maribeth Boelts. As an activity students made dog chew toys made out of old cotton t-shirts. The chew toys will be donated to a rescue dog shelter.
Next up was Vanessa Siderow. She read us a book called
The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. We had a class discussion about what makes us mad and how we react. We talked about some solutions like counting or taking deep breaths to calm our bodies and minds. As an activity, students made cup pups.
Our last mystery reader for this month was Tony Iasiello. He read us a book called
Wrestling The ABC's; Creating Character and Fostering Fitness by Tom and Veronica Davids. Tony shared his love of wrestling and American history. Ask your child which US presidents participated in the sport of wrestling. As an activity, students were brought to the cafeteria where a wrestling mat was set up. Students participated in learning some wrestling moves and learning about scoring points.
June
Our mystery reader this month was Mr. Alex Harrison. He read us a book called
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. The Harrison family loves to eat tacos. As a project, students made their own taco out of felt. A good time was had by all.
Our last mystery reader was Mr. Troy Phillips. He read us a book called
Everyone Needs A Rock by Byrd Baylor. Mr. Phillips shared his Native American culture with us. As a project, students were given their own rocks to paint and decorate.
