In this course, we will cover the fundamentals of computer science, including the basic architecture of a program, sequencing, variables, loops, if statements, functions, and more! We will learn these concepts through two main units. The first of which is physical computing, during which we will program robots to complete certain tasks and create interactive games. In our second unit, we'll learn about coordinates, animations, score tracking, and more, then culminate with our own games. We will be using “block-based” programming languages (as opposed to text-based), which are accessible for all levels of programmers - whether you have programming experience or not, you will learn lots and be challenged!
II. Grading
The grades in the course will consist entirely of classwork - homework will not be assigned unless a student fails to complete the lesson, activity, or assignment during the allotted class time. There will be in-class quizzes, graded programming assignments, and larger projects which will all contribute to the students grade. Readiness and participation may contribute to the student’s score as well.
III. Required Course Materials
Given the digital nature of this course, many of the assignments will be completed on the student’s school-issued iPad. They should therefore make sure it is charged before school so they will have enough battery for class. They may need it at home to complete unfinished assignments as well. Additionally, we will frequently be using handouts for note-taking, vocabulary, and referencing. Therefore, the students must be prepared with a writing utensil. To store our handouts, each student will need a miniature 3-ring binder (for 8.5 inch x 5.5 inch papers), along with 5 dividers. A full size binder will not work well, as the handouts are designed to work with a smaller binder. Linked below are viable options from Amazon.
IV. Office Hours
Extra help will be offered after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in our classroom (room C159) until about 3:20 PM.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out via email or phone. I am looking forward to working with you all!
