Rachel McMahon- MPS TESOL K-12
Welcome to ENL! ENL stands for English as a New Language, previously known as ESL. A student who is identified as an English Language Learner (ELL) in NYS is eligible to receive support in developing English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our program focuses on building social and academic English vocabulary as well as developing reading comprehension and literacy skills.
The level of support an ELL receives depends on their English level, of which there are five:
Entering (formerly called Beginner)
Emerging (formerly Low-Intermediate)
Transitioning (formerly Intermediate)
Expanding (formerly Advanced)
Commanding (formerly Proficient)
After determining a student's English Proficiency level using the New York State assessment, I collaborate with the classroom teacher to provide a combination of small group classes and in-classroom support. We have a wonderful ENL program that values each and every child, their language, culture, experiences and abilities.
