Dear Parents,

Social Skills instruction is a partnership between home and school.  Children first learn how to get along, to share, and to be sensitive within the family.  Then, as they enter school, friends and classmates also become important in reinforcing these lessons.  Studies tell us that children who feel good about themselves, and know how to get along with others, do better academically.  Our mutual task is to promote the development of the whole child.

This year again, the elementary psychologists in each building will be teaching social skills lessons as part of the District’s Circle of Friends Initiative.   Home assignments will be included and students will participate in discussions, role-plays, and activities that encourage cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution.  The district program will include a number of lessons in each classroom, but I will also be available to go into classrooms or meet with students as issues arise.
