    • sustain some measure of personal voice in their writing
    • compose expository essays that sustain at length a thoughtful idea, interpretation, or analysis using well-chosen evidence
    • employ a variety of rhetorical strategies and organizational techniques, and write narratives with increasing control of such elements as voice, tone, point of view and pace
    • recognize and correct wordiness in their writing and employ a variety of sentence types
    • complete a research project in which they compose increasingly sophisticated outlines
    • use research techniques and processes that can be applied in many areas of study and to many endeavors
    • read, take notes on, and integrate a variety of secondary source materials
