5th Grade Instrumental Music and Concert Band
The overall goal of the fifth grade instrumental program is to reinforce and expand the technique and expressiveness that each instrumental student is capable of. In order to prepare fifth grade students for the more rigorous and challenging instrumental music experience of middle school ensemble playing, more advanced material is introduced and a wider musical scope is established. The fifth grade takes on more of a leadership role in the concert band. Fifth grade students perform in two concerts during their 5th grade year.
Fifth graders spend the year increasing their range and technique, decoding and interpreting more complex written musical information and widening their horizons of musical understanding. New concepts like syncopation, major scales, the circle of fifths and more detail about the musical background of the repertoire are part of their learning experience. Every fifth grader is also expected to play a lead melody on his or her instrument.
