• Third Grade Instrumental Music Program

All Scarsdale third grade students will experience an exploratory introduction to instrumental music. Students will enjoy the opportunity to understand and experience the joy of playing a musical instrument. This program is a precursor to our band and orchestra program.

Students will play the violin, recorder, cello, and percussion for approximately seven weeks each. Instruments and books will be provided for use in school during class. Classes are split evenly into string and wind groups and students rotate to a new instrument after each seven week period. Focus is on instrument care and assembly, proper position and posture, basic technique and tone, music reading and solo and ensemble playing. These forty-minute classes meet once every six-day cycle.

In June, all third graders will attend a special assembly where they will see and hear the wide selection of band and orchestral instruments that we offer group instruction on in our fourth and fifth grade band and orchestra program. Having had this exploratory experience, they will be well-prepared to make an educated choice that they will be happy with.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your third grader and we hope that you will enjoy the experience along with them.
