• Dear Edgewood, Fox Meadow, Greenacres, and Heathcote Parents,

The purpose of this letter is to provide you with an update regarding the recently implemented District-provided food service in your student’s building.

As you may recall, the District took over these operations from local PTAs due to increasing challenges in sustaining those operations, and pressure received by our PTAs from state and national PTA organizations to move away from providing school lunches.

In September the District, through its contracted vendor Chartwells, phased in food service operations at Edgewood, Fox Meadow, Greenacres, and Heathcote. This new service adds almost 1,600 students to those who were already partaking in student lunches at Quaker Ridge Elementary, the Middle School and the High School.

During the transition into this extensive new program, we have appreciated the feedback we have received, not only from parents and staff, but also from our students. We are pleased to announce that as a result of much of this feedback and an internal review of the service to date, a new menu will be implemented, effective November 1st, with many new offerings and additional nutritional information.

Examples of enhanced offerings include the introduction of organic yogurt, and additional meal options for our pickier eaters of a bagel or muffin, yogurt, string cheese, fruit, crudites, and sunbutter and jelly sandwiches. In addition, watch for the introduction of a new hot entree “breakfast for lunch” as well as other options.

For those parents concerned about allergies, additional nutritional and ingredient information is now available on the website for all items that are prepared in our kitchens. In addition, Chartwells is currently working on the best method for communicating nutritional information to parents for items that are received from outside vendors. This work will be the immediate task of the Dietitian, who has recently been hired by Chartwells for the District.

We realize that there still may be many questions or concerns you have regarding this new program, and have prepared
this FAQ which we hope will address many of these questions.
