Writing in First Grade
We use the Advancing Literacy program to teach writing in First Grade. Throughout all four units, students work on planning, drafting, spelling, editing, revising and sharing. First graders explore several writing genres in the following units:
- Unit 1: Small Moments
- Unit 2: Topic Books
- Unit 3: Writing Reviews
- Unit 4: From Scenes to Series: Writing Fiction
Handwriting In First Grade
In first grade, we are now using Zaner-Bloser Handwriting. First grade is a time of transition as we learn correct formation of lowercase letters and teach the children to use capital letters ONLY when beginning a sentence or writing a proper noun. Proper letter formation is essential to developing our automaticity. Once we have a grasp of this, our focus can shift from how to write letters to writing in a way that shares our thinking and understanding.
**Please reinforce that all letters start at the top and not the bottom.
