Middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8 experience the visual arts each year for 10 weeks. Students are exposed to various art forms such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, digital art, animation, collage, and sculpture. Art is approached as a discipline with a knowledge base, however, independence of thought is encouraged.
At each grade level, there is an emphasis placed on the understanding and use of the elements and principles of art. Students are expected at each grade level to give written reflective responses to both personal and public art using the language of art. We strive to provide a rigorous, stimulating environment in which students find both challenge and support. We nurture a sense of curiosity, connection, and love of learning that we hope extends beyond the middle school years. The habits of mind, such as patience, persistence, and thinking beyond the ordinary, are stressed in the arts and provide a foundation for all disciplines and learning.
