• Welcome to Kindergarten!!!!!

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to kindergarten at Quaker Ridge School!   Kindergarten is such an exciting time.  Each day will bring opportunities for wonder, curiosity and discovery.  What a wonderful age to be!

Please join me on Thursday August 29th, from 9:00-9:30 for an annual Meet-the-Teacher event.  You are invited to stop by the classroom (124C) and see where we will be spending our days learning, laughing, and making so many precious memories.  If you have not ordered supplies through the PTA, this is a great time to drop them off. Your child will be able to take a look around, meet me and other classmates, and hopefully feel a bit more comfortable about coming to school the following week!

At 9:30, your child will have the special opportunity to board a school bus at the front of the school.  This will prepare your child when s/he takes the bus on the very first day of school. You can bring your child down to the front traffic circle to board a bus and let your child get a feel for sitting in a bus seat and buckling him/herself in.

Prior to the first day of school, I  encourage you to spend some time with your child reading Audrey Penn’s, The Kissing Hand.  This is one of my favorite books and I will spend the first two weeks of school doing many Kissing Hand activities.
I am looking forward to a very special year with you and your child.  With your support and cooperation, it will be a most successful and enriching experience for all.

              A Few Important Things:
**Since Kindergarten is a full day we strongly suggest that you pack a lunch from home for the first two weeks of school.  We will spend the first two weeks helping the children to become accustomed to using the cafeteria and getting on line for food, etc.  Since we are starting with a full day from the first day of school, it is imperitive to set routines and help the children become comfortable with expectations when it comes to lunch.  Beginning the school year by packing a lunch from home will be incredibly helpful and we truly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

**Another way to help your child adjust to Kindergarten is to let your child each morning how s/he is getting home, whether that be via bus, pick up, or KIDSBASE.  Please be sure to update your child's Dismissal Manager each day.  Calling the office to make last minute changes will only be an option in emergencies, not changes in play dates.

** If you plan on coming to our "Meet the Teachers" Event, please also bring 2 pictures of your child no larger than 2  1/2" x 2  1/2". This picture will be part of your child's table spot and cubby outside the classroom. A picture that is mostly of his or her face will work best. If you are unable to bring it on Thursday August 29st, you can place it in your child's back pack ready for the first day of school.
**The first day of school will be an exciting time for all of us! Our start time is 8:35. If you choose, you may walk your child down to our classroom, but please say your goodbyes outside in the hall.  I will be there at the door to greet each child as they walk in on their own.  They will have several activities to start as we wait for the class to arrive.  Our wonderful Kindergarten aides will be greeting our bus riders as they exit the buses and walk down the halls.   It’s normal for some students to feel apprehensive or nervous to come in, but please know that even if there are a few tears, they quickly dissipate as soon as the day really starts.  In the days leading up to the start of school, you can prepare your child by showing him or her how excited s/he should be.  When you visit the classroom with your child the week before, s/he will be able to find his or her name in many places around the room.  Additionally, reading The Kissing Hand or watching the video will help to ease any nerves.

**Snack: Starting on the first day of school, we will have two daily snacks, around 10:00 and 2:15.   Please remember to send your child to school with a healthy snack, including a drink, each day.  You might want to label them "Snack #1"/ "Snack #2", or "Morning Snack"/ "Afternoon Snack." We will also try to get outside for an extra recess each day so be sure to pack a light sweater for your child.

**K-CA is a NUT FREE classroom.  Please keep this in mind while you are choosing your child’s snacks. You can refer to the PTA's approved list of treats as well as additional information regarding what having a nut-free classroom really means.

**Art Smock: Our specials will begin on the first day of school. Please send in an art smock with your child’s name on it.  Over sized t-shirts or old button-up shirts work well.

**Extra clothes: Please send in an extra set of clothes for your child to keep in school.  This should include socks and underwear as well.  These clothes are invaluable on days when a student has an accident or simply slips in the mud outside.  Please place clothes in a labeled bag ziplock bag or shoe box.

I understand that you’ve been bombarded with lots of information and the school year hasn’t even begun yet. If there is anything that I haven’t answered, please don’t hesitate to ask. My Teacher Page is continuously updated and will hopefully provide answers to most of your questions.

If there is something you’re still wondering about, email is the best way to reach me.

I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer.  I look forward to a most successful kindergarten year with you and your family.
