Welcome to Mr. Boyar's Honors Geology Page!!

Geology 524 covers some of the most significant issues facing the planet:  Mineral and energy resources, flood control and drought, groundwater quality, and tectonics, to name only a few.  Just look at recent issues.  Devastating earthquakes, terrible flooding both in the U.S. and abroad.   Locally people still feel concern about climate change and the possibility of another Hurricane Sandy while the debate continues over whether hydrofracking is a viable alternative to natural gas and oil extraction.  Meanwhile, the price of oil has dropped to historic lows which has had a significant impact on the global economy.   This has shifted the supply and the movement out of the oil-rich Mideast in to the United States.  Is the U.S moving quickly enough to replace the use of fossil fuels with the development of alternative sources of energy?  These are just a few examples of the way Geology affects your life.

On another matter, I know you want to succeed in this course.  So, what do you need to do well?  Number 1, BE PRESENT!!  There is no substitute for being in class.  This is where you will hear what I expect you to know.  Simply getting notes from a friend is not the same.  Number 2, BE PREPARED!! Keep up with your reading.  Sometimes the reading is covered in class and sometimes it is not.  You are responsible for all reading as well as all work covered in class. Also, keep up with current issues related to Geology, particularly with the presidential election this school year.  Energy issues will be part of the debate between the candidates.  Come to class prepared to contribute.
