Each day, at home, fifth graders are required to read for at least 30 minutes.
I would encourage you to join your child by listening to him or her read at least once a week and by discussing what your child has read afterwards. Reading is a social activity and we develop a deeper understanding by talking with others. Your involvement will benefit your child's reading comprehension significantly. You may like to both read the same book, as in a book group; there are many interesting 5th grade books these days that are also engaging for adults.
One of the greatest influences you can have on your child's reading, is for you to read to him/her, even in 5th grade. There are so many distractions from reading in today's world, that we need to encourage reading as much as we can.
