Geology Field Trip
A significant area of study in Honors Geology is Earth's natural resources. Both mineral ores and fossil fuels are studied in terms of formation, extraction, and economics. The process of mining and its potential environmental impacts are key concepts to be explored.
We will be taking an exciting field trip to Eastern Pennsylvania to visit two different types of coal mines. Coal continues to be an important non-renewable energy resource that provides 60 % of our country's electricity and much of the world's energy . We will take a guided tour given by a miner through the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland, PA. Following this tour, we will walk through the site of a former open pit mine in Shamokin, PA. In addition to coal formation the open pit mine provides excellent exposure of geological structures.
