    Dear 3rd grade Parents,
Your child has had a year in exploratory instrumental music learning the violin,
cello, clarinet and baritone horn. The children now have the opportunity to sign
up for orchestra or band for next year or choose not to participate. Please read
the description below and contact Ms. Elkhatib (jelkhatib@scarsdaleschools.org)
for orchestra questions or Mr. Weber (aweber@scarsdaleschools.org) for band
    questions.

About 4th and 5th Grade Band & Orchestra
The Scarsdale Band and Orchestra program is an elective program that begins in
4th grade and includes in-school lessons and an ensemble experience.
Instruments available for study are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, baritone
horn, trombone or percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass.
Students attend like-instrument lesson groups for 30 minutes during school
hours, once every 6-day cycle. For example, a group of 4th grade trumpet
students would be pulled from their classrooms on A Day for 30 minutes.
Classroom teachers do not teach any new material when students are out of the
classroom. Therefore, instrumental students can easily make up any work missed
    during the 30-minute instrumental lesson.
Students learn proper posture, correct embouchure, proper breathing, listening,
sound production, hand position, bowing, following a conductor, and balance of
one part to another. Students also learn the care and maintenance of their
instruments, managing time for practice, and concert and performance etiquette.
Academically, students learn historical information about pieces being
performed, the form and structure of the piece, composer information, and
appropriate style for playing the piece.

Students are responsible for renting their own instruments and purchasing any
required method books. There are a number of reliable instrument rental
companies in the area and teachers have them listed on their Teacher Pages.
The ensemble portion of the program includes a band made up of all 4th and 5th
grade band students. Orchestra and Band rehearsals are before school at 7:50
once every 6-day cycle. Students must be driven to school on those days because
buses are not available. Beginning students (4th graders) are invited to join when
they reach a certain proficiency. There are 2 concerts per year: a winter
performance and a spring performance. All students enrolled in the program are
required to participate in these rehearsals and performances.
