Popham 7 will be involved in several on-going service learning projects focusing on poverty in the United States and Westchester. After completing a focused unit on the causes and effects of poverty, the students take action in several concrete ways.
1. Volunteering at the Food Bank for Westchester
We will visit the Food Bank as a Popham 7 group at least once this year. While at the Food Bank, we will help sort and pack cans and weigh and package rice.
2. Cooks with Compassion
Throughout the year, the students of Popham 7 will be encouraged to sign up for our Cooks with Compassion. Once or twice a month, we cook dinner for the Grace Church Soup Kitchen after school in the F&C kitchen. Our menu selections last year included baked ziti, mexican casserole, chocolate chip cookies, homemade salsa, and salad. Mrs. Strobel (our Popham 7 LRC teacher or I deliver the meal to the Soup Kitchen the next morning). Cooks with Compassion will begin in September and run through May. Each participant donates $10 to cover the cost of food.
3. Food Drive
In January, all of SMS participates in a Food Drive for the Food Bank. The drive is essential to the Food Bank's supply for the winter months and each section in social studies participates as a group.
