Reinforcement Ideas/Activities

Reading:

-Read each day (start with simple pattern books and build from there)

-Re-read familiar texts to build fluency

-Listen to books on tape to build listening comprehension skills

-Read to him/her or take turns reading

-Cooking (use kid-friendly cookbooks)

-Ask “wh” questions about books to build comprehension skills (literal and inferential)

-Practice retelling (beginning, middle, end)

-Practice talking about story elements (setting, characters,problem/solution)

-Go on trips—zoo, museums, etc. to build vocabulary/experiences

Word Study:

-Sight word bingo

-Sight word concentration (Memory)

-Magnetic letters or tiles

-Practice writing words/letters in sand, sky, shaving cream, use Wick sticks

-Rainbow write (trace each letter over in a different color)

-Trace around the sight word to help remember the “shape” of the word

-Play rhyming games

-Go on a letter scavenger hunt

-Make a magazine “letter” collage

-Play sorting games (sort by sound, letter, etc.)

-Play games on car rides, in the bath etc.

Writing:

-Build writing stamina (gradually increase time)

-Write in a journal

-Write his/her own book

-Practice letter formation, number formation

-Write letters to family members

-Write birthday invitations, thank you cards

-Write about what he/she’s read

-Use graphic organizers

-Give reminders/use checklists to reinforce spacing, capitalization and punctuation

Math:

-Practice math facts

-Play math games

-Practice counting aloud (1’s, 5’s, 10’s)

-Practice one to one correspondence

-Reinforce place value concepts

-Practice telling time

-Practice using coins/recognize value of each

-Use manipulatives—number lines, counters, number bonds, dotcards, dice, etc.
