Book of the Month:
Because Amelia Smiled
By David Ezra Stein
Dear Heathcote Family,
The 2012 year was a trying one for our Heathcote community, yet we came together to comfort and support one another and demonstrated our concern and compassion for each other. It is a testament to who we are, how we respond when faced with adversity. Crises and disasters (Hurricane Sandy) often bring out the best in us during the worst of times, but what about the more hum drum every day.
The book of the month, Because Amelia Smiled by David Ezra Stein talks about how a simple act of kindness can lift one person’s spirit and how something as small as a smile can brighten someone’s day. It doesn’t take much, and the chain reaction of Amelia’s smile touches hearts across cultures around the world and ultimately comes back to her. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote on the book jacket says “…Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
Taking a moment to make a difference with a thoughtful gesture or deed can have a profound effect. It is part of our interdependence and humanity. Author Stein dedicates his book: To you: Pass it on!
Let’s continue to care for each other and remember to smile. Here’s to a new year filled with hope and love.
With Warmest Wishes,
Pam Sparks
