Have-a-Go: Look over writing to find words that might be misspelled. Circle the word in question in your writing. Write it on the Have-a-Go form. Try it two other ways. Show your teacher or another adult. If you get it right on the first or second try, the adult puts a check by the word. If you don't get it right, the adult gives you the correct spelling. As you get to be a very good speller, the adult might give you the first four letters of the word and ask you to find the word in a dictionary. Sometimes three people can look the word up together in an intermediate dictionary and show the adult. When you have found the correct spelling, copy it carefully onto the have-a-go sheet. Any words that are now spelled correctly on the Have-a-Go sheet can now be spelled in your Quick Word Book Dictionary in the beginning of the book. For example, if you have misspelled the word tabel, try it two more times to get it right. taebel taible. The correct spelling of the word is "table". Put a dot next to the word "table" as it appears on the word list. If one of the words you misspelled is not included in the word list, write it correctly on the T pages 20-21 in your Quick Word book. By following these instructions, you will be creating a personalized dictionary for yourself.

Words that have the same spelling but different pronunciations and meanings are another kind of word. We found:
live - I live in town. He is appearing live on TV.
Dictionary: If you know the first four letters of a word, you can usually find it in an intermediate dictionary. The dictionary is divided into three parts: the beginning, middle, and the end. Look at the alphabet and divide the alphabet into thirds. The first third (beginning) will be approximately a-g, the second third (middle) will be approximately h-m, and the last third (end) will be n-z. Use only the guide words to find the guide words that the spelling word will be between. Remember guide words are the first and last words on a dictionary page. Once you have the correct guide words look down the page to find the spelling word as we practiced in class. In class, we are using intermediate dictionaries of which there are two kinds. The dictionary with the white cover is easier to use than the one with the green cover.
Scrabble: We are playing Scrabble with the other third grade classes and Dr. Paul Folkemer. Using seven letters we try to make plays online. See Scrabble page on this Schoolwires website.
Words will be presented on a Monday and tested on that Friday.
Monday: 2x each
Tuesday: ABC order
Wednesday: Sentences for 6 words
Thursday: Study
Friday: Quiz
High Frequency Lists - These lists consist of words that appear frequently in student writing. By learning to spell high frequency words, your writing will become easier to read by yourself and other people.
Our spelling words are from a list of high frequency words. They are commonly used words in writing and spelling. Third grade students will be held accountable for reading, spelling, and knowing the meaning of the words that they are assigned. Different children will have different word lists.
