Dear Families,
Welcome to kindergarten! My name is Kimberley Theall, and I am thrilled to be your child’s kindergarten teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.
I am proud to say that this year marks my 31st year teaching. I have been teaching kindergarten at Edgewood School since 1998. Before that, I spent five years teaching first and second grade at PS 51 in Manhattan’s District Two and one-year teaching pre-kindergarten at Hart Magnet School in Stamford, Connecticut. I adore teaching and look forward to working with a new group of children each year.
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a mother. My son Stephen and I live in Weston, Connecticut. Next week Stephen will begin his sophomore year at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. I can remember his first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday.
Please read below for important information.
Daily Schedule at Edgewood: Scarsdale Elementary schools run on a six-day rotation cycle labeled: A Day, B-Day, C Day, D Day, E Day, and F Day. You may locate the particular letter day on the district or digital Edgewood calendars.
Special Classes: Students attend a particular special class every full school day. These classes will begin on the first day of school. Students attend art, music, and physical education classes two times per cycle. On p.e. days, students must wear sneakers.
Water Bottle: Please send a reusable/spill-proof water bottle to school daily.
Snack: Kindergartners should come to school daily, including half days, with snacks packed separately from lunch. Please label the bag/container with the word snack and your child’s name written next to it. All snacks must be nut-free. Snacks should be healthy and easy for children to manage independently. Also include spoons, forks, straws, etc., if needed. The purpose of a daily snack is to provide a social break and a boost of energy during the morning hours. A snack should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to eat and enjoy! The students will eat a snack from home on the first day of school.
Lunch: Please pack your child a lunch daily unless you have ordered a school lunch. Also include spoons, forks, straws, etc., if needed. We are unable to heat up/microwave student lunches. The students will eat lunch on the first day of school.
Supplies: Many families may have ordered school supplies through the Edgewood PTA. If you have not purchased the kindergarten kit, you must buy all the items on the supply list. Please view the list on my Schoolwires Teacher page.
Extra Clothes: Children should bring a different set of clothing to keep in their cubby for the fall (including undies and socks) in a labeled Ziplock bag. Children will use the clothes if they get muddy, have a food or drink spill or have an accident. I will ask the students to bring in different clothes as winter weather approaches.
Art Smock: All students will need a smock for art class. An oversized t-shirt or an adult button-up shirt with sleeves cut to the wrists works best. We do not recommend plastic art smocks.
Family Photo (4” x 6”): Our classroom will have a family photo wall. Please send a picture of your family on the first day of school so your child can share it. The children will bring the photo home in June.
Teacher Page on Schoolwires: Please visit my teacher page on Schoolwires at Kindergarten / Kimberley Theall. You will find important information about the classroom there, and I will update this page regularly.
Email: Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at ktheall@scarsdaleschools.org. Understandably, new families often have a lot of questions when starting kindergarten. I am here to work with you! I will answer all emails within 24 hours during the school week.
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. Kindergarten is an exceptional time in your child’s life. I am excited to share in making this a memorable year for you and your kindergartner!
Enjoy the remainder of the summer,
Kimberley Theall
