PTA President's Message
|
|
Dear Fox Meadow Families,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a great summer and are ready for a fun, challenging and exciting year
at Fox Meadow. We are all looking forward to seeing old friends
and making lots of new ones.
Please take a careful look at the contents of this Update and the
back-to-school folder your child (one per family) will bring home
during the first week of school. Both the Update and the folder
contain notices and forms that may require your attention, and, believe
me, some of these deadlines will be here
before you know it! Also check out the school and PTA website
where there's even more useful information to be found.
I want to thank everyone who turned in your PTA volunteer form and urge
anyone who didn't to get involved in any way you can-- there's always
plenty to do! And if you haven't already, please join the PTA for
the 2010-2011 school year and give us your updated contact information
for this year's Directory. You can join online at the PTA Store -
Electronic Membership Form or print and submit a hard copy of the
Membership Form.
You can email me anytime at debmorel1@aol.com or call me at 723-7364
until 8pm.
Have a safe, fun holiday weekend!
Sincerely,
Deb Morel

|
|
If you have not already done so, please remember to
register for the Fox Meadow PTA for the 2010-11 school year.
We now offer the convenience of on-line registration and payment.
Paper forms are still available to download and submit to the PTA
basket in the main office. New this year, you now have the option
of listing a cell phone number in the Student Directory in addition to
your home phone number and address.
PTA Membership entitles you to one complimentary Student Directory and
extra copies at the bargain price of $2.50 each. PTA membership
is required for your children to participate in the PTA lunch programs,
the Fox Meadow After School Clubs, the first Fox Meadow School Play,
and many other wonderful PTA offerings this year.
For those who have already registered for the 2010-11 school year,
please be sure to let us know of any changes to your contact
information so that the Student Directory can be updated in time.
The Student Directory will be distributed at the Open House starting at
7pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2010, at the tables on the far side of
the Gym.
**Please note that the contact information collected by the PTA is
independent of the forms distributed through the District Office, so
please remember to let both the PTA and the District Office know of any
changes.
Questions, additions, or changes to the Student Directory should be
directed by e-mail as soon as possible to:

Obento Taste
Test
The obento
is a Japanese style boxed lunch. This year, we will again be
offering a choice of chicken or sushi (California rolls). Nijiya, our new Obento
lunch vendor, has offered to run a trial lunch on Wednesday, September
22, 2010. The lunches will be delivered to the school for the
children who pre-order the taste test. Forms to sign up for the
taste test only will be included in your family's back-to-school red
folder during the first week of school and are available by clicking
this link to the Obento Lunch Trial
Order Form or by visiting the "Forms" page of the PTA website.
Of course, you may also visit Nijiya on your
own. It is located at 18
N. Central Ave, Hartsdale, 949-2178, open
9 a.m.-7 p.m. To sample the lunch offerings that will be
available, you must place your order directly with Nijiya
at least 2 days prior to the date you would like to pick it up.
Tell Nijiya you are from Fox Meadow.
Note: Nijiya is strictly take-out;
there are no eat-in tables at the deli.
Remember, registration for the year long lunch program must be done

School
Photo Day
Thursday, September 23, 2010
Your child will be receiving an order form for photo day in his or her backpack
shortly after school begins. Please return the form with payment

your child then unfortunately we cannot permit a photo to be taken.

Volunteer in the Library
|
|
|
Welcome back to Fox Meadow. We are looking for
volunteers to donate a little time at the Fox Meadow Library.
Whether you can give an hour a week or every other week, we welcome
your help. Jan Schorr, the Fox Meadow Librarian, is looking for
volunteers to help re-shelve books, or re-label them or to help on some
other small discreet projects. If you have some time to
volunteer, please stop by the Library and speak with Jan or let one of
the Library Services Coordinators know
when you are available. It is a great opportunity to see the
children picking out books, reading, and researching topics.
In addition, parents are welcome to set up their own accounts to borrow
books from the Library. Just stop by the Library so an account
can be set up for you.
If you have any questions, please call or e-mail the Library Services
Coordinators:
Margot Milberg at 472-1474 or dmmberg@optonline.net
Lynda Ortner at 725-6306 or lynort@gmail.com

Nutrition & Food Safety Committee's Tip of the
Month: The Best Breads
|
|
|
With school just around the corner, it is almost time to
start packing those lunches again. The sandwich remains the
staple of most lunch boxes and it's not just what's on the inside of
that sandwich that makes a difference in your child's nutrition.
It does not matter if you choose a roll, pita or slice, what does
matter is what it is made of. Check that it is made of 100% whole
grain, be it wheat, cornmeal or rye. Whole grains are great
providers of fiber, phytochemicals and
essential B vitamins.
Multigrain does not necessarily mean that the bread contains 100% whole
grains so the best thing to do is to check the ingredient
list. Remember, ingredients are listed from greatest to least,
100% whole grain (no matter what the type) should be the 1st ingredient
on the list. If your child eats an entire sandwich at lunch, he
or she has met 2 out of the 3 recommended whole grain servings for
their day. Breads that contain 100 % whole grains as their key
ingredient, will also be high in fiber but just to be sure check the
label for at least 3 grams of fiber per slice.*
What about the new breads available with extra added fiber?
Unfortunately, the type of fibers added to the bread has not been
proven to have the same positive effects as the naturally occurring
fibers in whole grains. When checking the ingredient list, added
fibers are typically inulin, polydextrose, maltodextrose
or isolated oat/soy fibers. Note that the food label will not tell
you the fiber source, only the total grams. That is why it is so
important to check the ingredient list.
Pepperidge Farms, Arnold, Vermont Bread Company and Miltons
Baking all make excellent 100 % whole grain breads. Trader Joe's
whole grain variety of english
muffins are another great option. If your child (or you)
is an adventurous eater, try a sprouted
bread. These do not contain flour but actual sprouted grains. Some
picks recommended are Alvarado Street Bakery and Food for Life Ezekiel
4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain bread. Note, they taste best toasted and
need to be stored in the fridge since they do not contain
preservatives.
What about picky eaters? Take care when choosing a whole grain
white, many are not as healthful as they appear. The 1st
ingredient on the list should be whole grain white flour (albino white
wheat) such as Arnold's
line of Whole Grain Country White. Pepperidge Farm's Farmhouse
Whole Grain White is another good option since it contains more whole
wheat than refined flour.
*Note: A child's recommended fiber requirements
are based on age plus 5 and is measured in grams.
Please send comments, suggestions, or recipes to the Nutrition and Food
Safety Committee Co-Chairs:
