Second Grade Reading

 5 Components
  1. Whole Class Lessons/Work
  2. Small Group Lessons/Work
  3. Individual Help/Work
  4. Private Reading
  5. Readaloud (Teacher Reading to Class)
Each second grade unit of study moves the child along as a reader, in a very well-thought-out manner, and in line with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.

How Parents Can Help:

Your child's reading should be as joy-filled as possible! Any and all of the following can have a positive impact on your child as a reader:
~Read in front of your child
~Read with your child
~Read to your child
~Have your child read to you
~Show an interest and excitement in your child's reading
~Bring books home from the library or book store that might interest your child. Then (and here comes the hard part): do not question him as to whether he's reading them. This may sound counter-intuitive, but many parents over the years have had great luck with this recommendation! Feel free to discuss it further with me for more details if you'd like!
