Goals of the program:
To ensure that our students feel comfortable and safe in their new school.
To facilitate the transition into a new culture and educational environment.
To provide instruction that develops listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
To help our students perform at grade-level in their academic subjects.
To see that each child reaches his/her potential and exits the ESL program at the pace which suits them.
Structure of the Program:
The number of instructional periods for each child varies depending on grade and proficiency level.
Students are grouped according to grade level and proficiency level.
Class size ranges from 1 to 6 students.
Children are pulled from their regular classes during CCT time.
Assessments:
Students must take the LAB-R (Language Arts Battery-Revised) in order to enter the program. The LAB-R is given only ONE time.
The NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test) is given yearly to assess progress. Students can exit ESL when they score “proficient” on the NYSESLAT. It can take a few years to exit ESL.
Report Cards are distributed 3 times per year and conferences are held in the Fall.
