Goals of the program:
  • To ensure that our students feel comfortable and safe in their new school.
  • To facilitate the transition into a new culture and educational environment.
  • To provide instruction that develops listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
  • To help our students perform at grade-level in their academic subjects.
  • To see that each child reaches his/her potential and exits the ESL program at the pace which suits them.
Structure of the Program:
  • The number of instructional periods for each child varies depending on grade and proficiency level.
  • Students are grouped according to grade level and proficiency level.
  • Class size ranges from 1 to 6 students.
  • Children are pulled from their regular classes during CCT time.

Assessments:
  • Students must take the LAB-R (Language Arts Battery-Revised) in order to enter the program.  The LAB-R is given only ONE time.
  • The NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test) is given yearly to assess progress.  Students can exit ESL when they score “proficient” on the NYSESLAT.  It can take a few years to exit ESL.
  • Report Cards are distributed 3 times per year and conferences are held in the Fall.
