The Middle School Art curriculum is designed to develop content knowledge and skills in the following areas: recognition of the role and importance of art and artists in society, culture, and history; critical assessment of art works from aesthetic and cultural perspectives; creative problem solving; technical processes; and personal expression through art production. The artistic skills required for satisfying achievement in art are developed and the critical skills involved in appreciating art are emphasized. Self-expression is stressed in the program, promoting the confidence and positive self-image needed at this age.

The overall goal is to prepare all students to incorporate the benefits of the arts into their lives and to appreciate that the arts are applicable to all areas of life.
