PTA Committees and Descriptions

Art Room:
The Art room committee offers assistance to the Edgewood Art teacher on a weekly basis. The committee meets once a week for 1 – 1 ½ hours from the first week of school until the last week of school. The day and time is determined by the art teacher’s schedule each year. Duties consist of matting student’s work, labeling art work, glossing, hanging, arranging, cleaning, mending, organizing, anything to help the art teacher. A large part of the job is displaying the students’ art work around the school.
PTA Audit Committee: Audits PTA books when necessary, usually during the summer.
Book Fair:
The Book Fair is usually held the first week of November to coincide with Book Week. The committee works with the Edgewood Librarian to plan, coordinate, gather volunteers and run for the Book Fair. It is held for three days, generally 9-12 and 1-3. One evening the fair is open 6-8pm.
Buddy Program: Welcomes new families to Edgewood and establishes host families for newcomers.
Budget Liaison: Participates in parent/teacher committee to review the Scarsdale Board Budget.
C.H.I.L.D. (Children Having Individual Learning Difference):
Examines issues for parents of children with special needs.
Circle of Friends:
Monthly meetings with “Circle of Friends” committee members from the other four elementary schools in Scarsdale to discuss the implementation of ideas to promote the themes of “Respect, Accept, Care” in all the schools.
Class Parent (Grade): Liaisons between your child's teacher and the other parents.
Class Parent (Head): Coordinates the class parent program for K-5.
Classical Cafe:
Plans a restaurant style lunch for students including entertainment performed by students. Work closely with the Music Teacher and Teacher-in-charge to put together 12 Cafes – each grade has 2 per school year. Duties include creating bulletin board to publicize performers, food preparation and communicate with parents of upcoming cafes.
Colonial Fair:
Organize a day in the Spring where Fourth Grade students participate in a host of colonial activities from 18th century America.
Community Service:
Designs & initiates student projects for the benefit of the less fortunate. Past years events include: Halloween Candy Drive (Oct.), Thanksgiving Food Drive (Nov.), Holiday Drive to collect Hats & Mittens (Dec.), Charity Drive (Mar) and Midnight Run – 4th & 5th graders make bagged lunches one Friday (Apr or May).
Cultural Arts: Researches and chooses programs and workshops for student enrichment.
Edgewood Athletic Wear:
Committee coordinates this fundraiser by ordering and conducting sales of Edgewood athletic clothing wear. Athletic wear will be sold at various times during the year, including the first two weeks of school and at the Edgewood Fair.
Edgewood Extra Editor:
The Edgewood Extra serves as the primary and regular bulletin that informs and reminds Edgewood families about news and events from the PTA, school officials, and committees, etc. and for news and notices of extra curricular and recreational events. A primary editor receives article submissions by email from the school community, creates a Word document and according to the schedule emails it to Edgewood families.
Edgewood Fair: Plans and coordinates spring fundraiser which includes games, rides, merchandise sales & food court.
Edgewood Fair Treasurer: Treasurer for the Fair in May and handles all accounting and monies.
Edgewood Social: Plans an evening social fundraising event for parents, faculty and staff.
Environment: Works to increase student awareness of environmental issues with faculty and students.
Fifth Grade Committee: Coordinates activities for the Fifth Grade Class.
Fifth Grade Yearbook Committee: Collects photos and arranges for the 5th graders’ yearbooks.
Friends of Music & Art:
Liaison acts as the communication link between the Friends and each PTA Board in the district and PT Council. Duties include attendance at all Friends meetings to report on the art and music activities in your school, any concerns the art and music faculty have told you about and any concerns about art and music from parents/PTA. There are five meetings a year. Liaisons should attend PTA meetings and report to the PTA board about the activities of the Friends.
*Gift Wrap: Coordinates the fall gift wrap fundraiser. (*Was not done in 2011-2012)
*Health Fair: (This event was taken out of the school day and combined with Theme Night for 2010.)
The committee coordinates the annual PT Council event for 3rd, 4th & 5th graders. This 3 hour event (between 9am – 12 noon), is usually held in March/April and is comprised of approximately 10 fun and educational workshops. Parent volunteers are assigned to monitor the classrooms while the presentations are being made. This year workshops were offered for K -2 grades. *Held every other year in the past, but this year was combined with Theme Night.
Historical Society Liaison: Liaison to the educational programs of the Scarsdale Historical Society.
Hospitality: Oversees refreshments at PTA functions, the staff holiday luncheon and the staff recognition luncheon.
Kids BASE Liaison: Acts as a liaison for Kids BASE.
Legislation: Communicates pending legislation which address school issues.
Library: Coordinates volunteers to assist in the library.
Lice Committee: Arranges for school-wide head lice checks three times per school year.
Lunches:
Obento: Organizes weekly Japanese lunch for K-5 on Monday’s.
Pasta Day: Organizes weekly pasta lunch for K-5 on Friday’s.
Pizza Day: Organizes weekly pizza lunch for K-5 on Wednesday’s.
Tuesday (Lange’s) Lunch: Organizes weekly lunch from Lange’s for K-5 on Tuesday’s.
Membership and Student Directory:
Recruits members for the PTA and collects annual dues. Prepares and distributes directory to all PTA members.
Multicultural Families: Coordinates programs designed to share information about different cultures and traditions.
New Families: Welcomes new families to Edgewood, hosts a breakfast in September and an evening party in early Fall.
Note Cards:
The committee plans and coordinates the sale of note cards designed by the students. As these cards can be a great gift for the holidays, product distribution is done by then. To make this deadline, the process starts with contacting the Note Card company to send materials to school. Distribute materials to students and have them design the cards at home. Collect, organize, make any corrections and send back to the company with payment. Return finished product back to students.
Program Committee: Plans the school picnic in September and ice skating party in late winter.
Publicity:
The Publicity Committee handles Edgewood School press releases to local media contacts, attends an annual district-wide Publicity meeting as well as monthly meetings with the school Principal and Teacher-In-Charge to discuss potential story ideas, takes pictures and attends events and writes news stories whenever possible, or arranges to have those events covered.
Safety: Oversees the bicycle safety day and finger printing programs and handles traffic and safety issues pertaining to school.
School Board Voting Liaison: Helps keep community up-to-date on local elections.
School Pictures: Schedules & oversees the taking of student and class pictures.
School Supplies: This program provides parents an opportunity to purchase a “Back-to-School Supply Pack” online.
Sports Swap:
A one day event held on a Saturday in late Winter that provides an opportunity to buy and sell used sports equipment. Proceeds benefit all PTA members. Volunteers set up items for sale the day prior and operate the booth the next day.
Staff Recognition Day Luncheon: Organizes the Staff Recognition Day Luncheon in March.
Task Force on Drugs & Alcohol:
Community-wide group devoted to educating youth and adults about drugs & alcohol. Attend all Task Force meetings. Meets five times a year at the Scarsdale High School. A news article should appear in the Edgewood Extra after any meeting which emphasized those issues on the minds of elementary school parents.
Technology Liaison:
Updates and maintains the Edgewood student database for Constant Contact and PTA website. Edits and produces the mid-week E-Blast which is published by the PTA. Helps compile the electronic summer mailing which welcomes all families.
Theme Night:
Plans and coordinates an evening academic family event. The theme is relevant to some part of the school curriculum. Activities are geared to K-5. It is a fun evening lasting approx. 1 ½ - 2 hours. Held ever other year and was held in 2010.
Volunteers at Large: A pool of people to call upon when necessary.
Walking School Bus: Coordinates the Walking School Bus on Friday mornings in the Fall and Spring.
Young Writers Conference:
A PT Council event held in late winter for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders throughout Scarsdale. Acts as the Edgewood liaison and attends a PT council meeting sometime in the winter. The main goal of the Edgewood liaison is to procure parent volunteers to help out on the day of the conference.
